Take the Big Blue Test!
Twitter Summary: Join the @diabetesHF and take the #BigBlueTest! 14-20 min. of exercise = a donation to diabetes!
Bring in Diabetes Awareness Month by taking the Diabetes Hands Foundation’s Big Blue Test! This year-round program encourages people with and without diabetes to get active and help raise money for diabetes. Here’s how it works:
-
Test blood sugar (people without diabetes can skip this step),
-
Get active for 14-20 minutes,
-
Test blood sugar again,
-
Share the results through the short Big Blue Test survey;
-
Feel good that you were active and donated $1 to a diabetes charity.
According to the Big Blue Test site, on average, participants see their blood sugars drop 20% after just 14-20 minutes of exercise. That could mean a drop from 200 mg/dl to 160 mg/dl or from 120 mg/dl to 96 mg/dl.
In addition to encouraging physical activity, the Big Blue Test makes a donation for each survey entry between now and November 30 (participants can take the survey more than once!) to diabetes non-profits providing supplies, services, and education to people with diabetes in need. Fall 2015 grant recipients chosen by the Diabetes Hands Foundation include Sucre Blue and CarbDM, both of which maintain programs that deliver care to underserved communities.
After seven years of the Big Blue Test running as a once-yearly campaign, 2016 will mark its beginning as a year-round program. The fall campaign ends this November 30, while winter and summer campaigns will start up in 2016.
