Keep Track of Your Insulin Doses! Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Insulin Pen Now Available in Pharmacies

Companion Medical's InPen is now available in 60,000 retail pharmacies across the United States

Companion Medical’s InPen, a reusable, Bluetooth-enabled smart insulin pen that captures mealtime injection data (amount, time) and sends it to a paired app, is now available in retail pharmacies across the United States. InPen aims to make insulin injection safer – it automatically captures mealtime doses, keeps track of insulin on board and includes an in-app bolus calculator (to prevent insulin “stacking”). It also gives users and healthcare providers more actionable data – e.g., showing glucose and insulin data on the same report.

Prior to April, the InPen was only available through mail order. With this expansion, individuals can pick up the pen at over 60,000 locations across the United States. Healthcare providers will now be able to electronically send prescriptions for InPen straight to the pharmacy, simplifying hassle and continuing diabetes technology’s push into the pharmacy.

InPen is the first and only FDA-cleared smart pen for insulin delivery, and the paired phone app is available for free on Apple iOS and Android. It is currently compatible with Novolog and Humalog rapid-acting insulin cartridges. (The prefilled cartridges are prescribed and purchased separately and inserted into the pen.)

InPen requires a prescription and is covered by many insurance companies in the United States. Over two-thirds of InPen users pay a $50 copay, and the device lasts one-year without any recharging (the battery runs out after one year). For those without coverage, Companion Medical’s new co-pay assistance program aims to bring copays under $99 per year for most users.
